Borussia Dortmund vs Cologne

Both teams lost to a couple of north London teams in European action, both by a 3-1 scoreline. It also marked Dortmund's first defeat in the Peter Bosz era, although new signing Andrey Yarmolenko did manage to grab his first goal for the club. The good news is that Julian Weigl is ready for action following a broken ankle that kept him out of the start of the season. Marc Batra and Marcel Schmelzer won't make it after picking up injuries in last weekend's goalless draw at Freiburg. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang will be looking to complete his collection, having scored against 16 of the current 18 Bundesliga clubs.  The two he hasn't scored against? Dortmund, of course, and Cologne.

Match Stats:

  • Borussia Dortmund 5-0 Cologne
  • Shots: 19-4
  • Possession: 74%-26%
  • Corner kicks: 8-5

Having been nudged off top spot by Hannover on Friday, Dortmund began here determined to resume pole position and needed only two minutes to break the deadlock, with Maximilian Philipp netting an excellent first goal for the club following fine work from newcomer Andrey Yarmolenko. BVB continued to dominate and added a second on the stroke of half-time when Sokratis prodded home following a corner.

Worse was to come after the interval for Cologne, who failed to seriously trouble the Dortmund goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a quick-fire double to put the outcome beyond any doubt, before Philipp scored his second of the evening to cap an all round outstanding display by Peter Bosz's side.
