Northern Ireland vs Germany

The top two countries in Group C go head to head in Belfast. For Northern Ireland, they are guaranteed a top-two finish after a 2-0 win over Czech Republic last month. A draw would be enough for the defending world champions, who incredibly have never lost an away World Cup qualifier.

Aaron Hughes has withdrawn from the Northern Ireland squad after picking up a calf strain, with Dunfermline defender Callum Morris being called up in his place. Craig Cathcart (knee) will also miss out.

Germany have a host of household names missing. They are Manuel Neuer (foot), Marco Reus (knee), Mario Gomez (ankle), Mario Gotze, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira.

This could well be a low-scoring game given that this is a battle of the two tightest defences in qualifying. Both countries have conceded just two goals so far.

Match Stats:

  • Northern Ireland 1-3 Germany
  • Shots: 9-11
  • Possession: 35%-65%
  • Corner kicks: 4-6

Defending champions Germany confirmed their qualification for next year's World Cup in Russia by beating Northern Ireland 3-1 in Belfast.

Sebastian Rudy shot into the top corner in the second minute, Sandro Wagner rifled home from the edge of the area, and Joshua Kimmich drove in late on.

Josh Magennis headed Northern Ireland's goal in stoppage time.

Germany progress as group winners but Northern Ireland remain well placed to make November's play-offs.
