Cologne vs Wolfsburg

Cologne have yet to enjoy a win all season and nearly tasted it last weekend. They led 3-0 against Freiburg but squandered it all to lose 4-3.

Cologne have just three points to show for and sit rock-bottom. Four of the last five teams sitting bottom at Christmas have been relegated.

Up against Wolfsburg, they have a neat record as they are unbeaten in five league matches against them.

Wolfsburg have drawn nine of their 12 games under Martin Schmidt. A remarkable fact although it could have been just eight draws.

Divock Origi missed from a yard out in his team's 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in midweek. The on-loan Liverpool man has survived that horrendous miss and will feature alongside Mario Gomez.

Cologne will be missing Sehrou Guirassy, who is injured. He has scored four of Cologne's nine goals this season.

Prediction: Cologne 2-2 Wolfsburg

Match Stats:

  • Cologne 1-0 Wolfsburg
  • Shots: 15-5
  • Possession: 42%-58%
  • Corner kicks: 5-4

Interim Cologne coach Stefan Ruthenbeck opted for a more attack-minded 4-4-2 formation, following his side's 1-0 defeat at Bayern Munich in midweek. The Billy Goats enjoyed the lion's share of possession in a cautious first half, but - aside from watching a long-range effort from full Bundesliga debutant Birk Risa go wide - Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels had precious little to do.

Milos Jojic rattled the crossbar early in the second half as Cologne continued to do all the running, and their persistence was rewarded when Clemens stroked home Jojic's diagonal pass in the 67th minute. It was all Wolfsburg for the remainder as Mario Gomez had an effort cleared off the line and Timo Horn thwarted Jeffrey Bruma, but the Billy Goats held on for a long-overdue victory - although they are still nine points adrift of the relegation play-off spot at the halfway stage.
