Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid

It is the appetizier to El Clasico on Saturday, but don't hold your breath on this turning out to be a classic.

Espanyol have just four wins and are struggling to hit the onion bag. They have managed just five goals in their last ten turnouts. Something worth to pick out? Espanyol's last five home league games have produced just five goals in total, while Atletico have kept five straight clean sheets away from home.

Free of Champions League commitments, Diego Simeone's side are one of the three teams still unbeaten across Europe's major leagues. The close 1-0 win over Alaves over the weekend was their fifth 1-0 win in the league.

Spanish defender Victor Sanchez is suspended for Espanyol after picking up five yellow cards in the league this season. Also out due to suspension is centre-half David Lopez, after he also received his fifth yellow card.

There are no new injury/suspension concerns for Atletico and they can breathe easy with no players heading into the game risking suspension.

Prediction: Espanyol 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Match Stats:

  • Espanyol 1-0 Atletico Madrid
  • Shots: 6-5
  • Possession: 44%-56%
  • Corner kicks: 2-3

Atletico Madrid were beaten for the first time in La Liga this season as Diego Simeone's side missed the chance to close in on leaders Barcelona.

Atleti failed to put the pressure on with a shock defeat to Espanyol, who move to 14th after Sergio Garcia swept home the only goal.

Centre-back Diego Godin headed in for Atleti but saw his effort ruled out.

Defeat - Atleti's first away from home in the league for a year - means that Barcelona and Manchester City are the only unbeaten sides in Europe's top five leagues.
