Hamburg are the only team to have never been relegated to the German second division. Unfortunately, that streak seems to be very close to ending. Hamburg dropped deeper into the relegation zone after losing 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund last weekend. They are currently on a winless run that dates back to November and are in a desperate need of points. Bayer Leverkusen are their rivals this week, which isn't a good sign for Hamburg.

Good news for Hamburg is that center back Kyriakos Papadopoulos is back for this match after serving a ban for the red card he saw versus Hannover. Midfielder Lewis Holtby is also expected to be available after recovering from an illness.

Bayer Leverkusen had a hard fought match versus Werder Bremen in the DFB Pokal last week, so coach Heiko Herrlich decided to give some players a rest at the weekend. That plan backfired on Herrlich as his side lost 2-0 to Hertha Berlin. It was only their second loss at home all year, the other being against Bayern Munich, but it knocked them out of second place and out of Champions League qualification places, all the way down to fifth.

After being rested last week, Charles Aranguiz and wunderkind Leon Bailey are expected to return to the starting eleven. Leverkusen will have to play this one without captain Lars Bender though, who is out with an injury.

Bayer Leverkusen moved up to second place after defeating Hamburg 2-1.

The first scoring opportunity for Leverkusen came in the 25th minute. Julian Brandt passed the ball to Tin Jedvaj took a right footed shot at goal but his effort was off the mark.

A minute later, Kai Havertz chipped the ball into the box and found Charles Aranguiz. The Chilean was first to the ball with a header, but it glanced off the post.

Bayer kept the flurry of attacks coming and in the 28th minute Benjamin Henrichs sent a cross into the box, Havertz was there to meet it but his header missed the target.

Two minutes later Leon Bailey played a dangerous ball for Brandt, who crossed it into the box but nobody was there to meet it.

Finally, Leverkusen found their goal in the 40th minute. Jamaican star Bailey put his side ahead after showing a great bit of skill. Douglas Santos made a poor attempt to clear the ball and Bailey was there to intercept. He dribbled past his opponents and the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net.

Bayer would double their lead five minutes into the second half. Bailey played the ball to Henrichs, who sent in a cross for Havertz. The 18-year-old German made no mistake, slotting a left footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Hamburg found a consolation goal through Andre Hahn, but it would not be enough.

Bayer Leverkusen lead Leipzig for second place on goal differential. The Red Bull club play on Monday. Hamburg are now deeper into the relegation zone, six points away from safety.
