Mainz 05 travel to Augsburg on Match Day 31 in the Bundesliga, bidding to escape the relegation dogfight. Indeed, should Freiburg pick up anything at Hamburg on Saturday, Mainz will need to at least match their result in order to escape the bottom three. Top scorer Yoshinori Muto will be a big miss here. Stefan Bell and Niko Bungert are also out.

Sitting in 11th and seven points clear of the relegation zone with just four games remaining, there isn't anything like as much on the line for Augsburg. Nine points adrift of the European spots, it would be no surprise were motivation to be running just a little low. The home side must do without the injured Raphael Framberger and Jan Morávek here, whilst there is also a slight doubt around joint top scorer Alfred Finnbogason.

Having only lost two of their first 11 at home, things have rather fallen apart for Augsburg of late. They head into this game bidding to snap a four-game losing streak at the Augsburg Arena. They did beat Mainz 05 3-1 away earlier in the campaign though and will be hoping for something similar.

The reason Mainz are in the position they are in is undoubtedly down to their way form. They have been simply awful on the road this term, winning just one of 15 games.

Mainz need this more and do arrive on a three-match unbeaten streak. They should do enough to pick up something, but without Muto the win may just be beyond them.

Referee Frank Willenborg took the names of Augsburg's Philipp Max, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Caiuby and Alfred Finnbogason. Alexandru Maxim was the only Mainz player to see yellow.

A solid and professional display from the home team here. They were happy to cede possession at times, but never really looked in any serious danger, and were certainly the more threatening side when on the ball.

The first half was a relatively attacking affair as both sides went for the win. Augsburg having just about the better of it.

The home side took the lead in the 29th minute. Excellent work from Alfred Finnbogason on the right-hand side of the area. Beating his man before spotting Michael Gregoritsch unmarked in the area. Slick finish from Gregoritsch, cutting inside and passing the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0 at half-time.

The second belatedly came in injury time. Mainz keeper, Rene Adler caught upfield having joined in the attack and woefully out of position when Augsburg broke on the counter. Rani Khedira crossing from the right to find Finnbogason in the box. The front man slotting home well past the two defenders in his way attempting to make up for the absence of Adler. 2-0 final score.

Augsburg remain in 11th spot but this win takes them to within touching distance of the teams up to eighth.

Mainz remain in 15th place and firmly in the relegation mix. Five points clear of second bottom, they should at least avoid the automatic drop positions. Evading the relegation playoff on offer for a 16th placed finish looks touch and go though. They are currently level on points with 16th placed Freiburg but with a superior goal difference.
