Match Day 35
Angers vs Marseille
Monday, April 30th, 2018
00:00 am (GMT+8 Timing)
Stadium: Stade Raymond Kopa

Angers:
Last five matches form: L W D D L
Average goals per match: 1.12
Average goals against per match: 1.35
Top Scorer: Karl Toko Ekambi (17)

Marseille:
Last five matches form: D W W W W
Average goals per match: 2.12
Average goals against per match: 1.21
Top Scorer: Florian Thauvin (19)

Two sides with very differing motivation levels clash at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Match Day 35 in Ligue 1. Whilst Angers season is simply petering out, Marseille have a Champions League place to chase, as well as the possibility of a Europa League final to look forward to.

Any number of doubts for Angers here with Romain Thomas, Yoann Andreu, Billy Ketkeophomphone, Angelo Fulgini, Jeff Reine-Adélaïde and Baptiste Gauillaume all nursing ailments of one form or another. The home side will be hoping at least a couple of those players will be fit on time.

Keeper Steve Mandanda and right back Hiroki Sakai are the main injury concerns for Marseille. Although with the big Europa League second leg against Salzburg looming in midweek, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Rudi Garcia make a few changes.

It may however prove a mistake for Garcia to rest too many of his big guns. The Europa League run has certainly lit up the Vélodrome, but Marseille still have a realistic chance of qualifying for the Champions League through their league position. Level on points with third placed Lyon they need to keep picking up the wins to keep the pressure on.

Having failed to win any of their first eight at home, Angers have improved of late, winning five of their past nine.

Marseille have been very good on the road, winning 10 of 17 and only failing to score on two occasions.

In the anticipation of Garcia fielding a strong side I fancy Marseille to do enough to bag the points.

Prediction: Angers 1 - 2 Marseille

Karl Toko Ekambi was booked by referee Nicolas Rainville who also took the names of Marseille's Bouna Sarr, Yohann Pele and Luiz Gustavo.

Marseille could hardly have asked for a better start in their bid to pick up a win ahead of this weeks Europa League semi final second leg. Abdoulaye Bamba flattening Valere Germain when a corner was swung in from the left and the referee pointing to the spot. Florian Thauvin stepping up to convert into the left-hand side.

Far from wilting after this early setback, Angers came right back into it, forcing a couple of smart stops from keeper Pele. Marseille held their lead into the break though.

Marseille came out on the front foot in a bid to put the game to bed, even shooting direct from the kick off. Thauvin looked dangerous when on the ball and was only denied by an excellent save from Ludovic Butelle when curling in an effort from the edge of the area. Marseille couldn't get the second though and in the end that proved costly.

The equaliser arrived in the 79th minute. A free kick from the left-hand side finding Ismael Traore unmarked at the far post to nod home. 1-1 final score.

A costly slip up for Marseille, although with Monaco also failing to win this weekend, it certainly could have been worse. They nevertheless remain fourth and outside of the Champions League places. Just a point adrift of Monaco with three still to play, there may well be a twist or two yet.

A solid point for Angers who remain in 14th but now six points clear of the drop zone, their safety looks assured.
