Two sides who have experienced rather contrasting fortunes of late do battle at the Estadio Rommel Fernández this week as Panama play host to Northern Ireland.

Football in Panama is still on something on a high with the nation having qualified for the World Cup Finals for the first time in their history.

Northern Ireland won't be on the plane to Russia this summer, but they could scarcely have come closer, only going down by the most controversial of penalties in their two-legged play off against Switzerland.

Northern Ireland are actually much the better of these two sides according to the global rankings, ranked 27th as opposed to 55th for Panama, but don't look like fielding anything like a full strength side here, Defender Gareth McAuley is the top scorer in a squad lacking in experience in both midfield and attack.

Panama likely will send out a strong side though as they bid to build a bit of momentum headed into the finals. Recent results have been mixed though with a 6-0 humbling at the hands of Switzerland the undoubted low point.

We would fancy a full strength Northern Ireland side to come out on top here, but with a number of key players missing, the advantage of playing on home soil may see Panama sneak the win.

Prediction: Panama 2 - 1 Northern Ireland
