The new season gets underway in France this weekend with proceedings kicking off at the Stade Velodrome as Marseille play host to Toulouse.

Marseille did the double over Toulouse last season on their way top a fourth placed finish, winning this fixture 2-0.

As with many of the top sides in Europe, the summer's World Cup will likely have a significant bearing on Marseille's starting line-up here. Steve Mandanda, Florian Thauvin, Duje Caleta Car and Adil Rami are all likely to be rested. On the plus side, Dmitri Payet is fit and ready, as is Kostas Mitroglou who will be hoping to avoid the injury curtailed season he endured last term.

Clément Michelin is the only real injury concern for Toulouse with summer acquisitions Mathieu Dossevi and John Bostock expected to make their competitive debut's.

If Toulouse are to avoid another relegation threatened campaign they will need to improve on their away record which saw them lose 13 of 19 on the road.

This looks a tough place to start though. Marseille were fairly dominant at the Velodrome last season, winning 12 of 19 and losing only twice.

Toulouse are set up to attack and as such could cause problems to this understrength Marseille side. Whether they can keep things tight enough at the back to get anything out of the game must be doubtful though.

Marseille may not run away with this but should still have enough to come out on top.

Four bookings in this one with referee Ruddy Buquet showing the yellow card to Christopher Jullien, Kelvin Adou and Ibrahim Sangare for Toulouse and debutant Jordan Amavi of Marseille.

It took a while for the home side to make the breakthrough here, but they ultimately ran out comfortable and deserved winners, being well on top in all the key stats.

The opening goal came in the 44th minute, with a little help from VAR. Kelvin Adou's handball in the area being missed by the referee but spotted by the video assistant. Dmitri Payet doing the honours from the spot, dispatching into the bottom left corner.

It was that man Payet who doubled Marseille's advantage in the 62nd minute. Bouna Sarr breaking into the right hand side of the area and unleashing a shot on goal. Baptiste Reynet doing well to save but unable to do anything when Payet smashed in the rebound.

With the points in the bag, Marseille added a little gloss to the score line with two late goals.

The first came in the 89th minute. Valere Germain brilliantly plucking a ball over the top out of the air before finishing expertly into the bottom right corner from around 12 yards.

Still time for last season's top scorer, Florian Thauvin to get in on the act. The Frenchman latching onto Jordan Amavi's cross in the area, - with a little assistance from an Adou defensive blunder - and finishing high up the centre of the goal from around six yards.

An excellent start to the season from Marseille as they bid to build on their last positive campaign. They will face bigger challenges than this though.
