Match Day 1 in La Liga concludes with this clash at the San Mamés as Athletic Bilbao play host to Leganés.

Both of these sides will be hoping for better this season. Athletic Bilbao having finished a disappointing 16th.

The bottom three were so bad last season that Leganés looked safe from a long way out. 18th was nevertheless a disappointing finish though.

It was honours even between these two sides last season, with Athletic Bilbao winning this fixture 2-0 and Leganes coming out on top 1-0 in the reverse game.

It was pretty obvious to see where Leganés main problems lay last year. An average of just 0.89 goals scored per game highlighting the need for attacking reinforcements. Mauricio Pellegrino has certainly acted in this regard, bringing in the like of Guido Carillo and Michael Santos over the summer.

Bilbao's main business has concerned bringing more solidity to the side, particularly in the full back and midfield positions. They surely can't be any worse than last season, but progress may not be as quick as fans might like under Eduardo Berizzo.

This has all the making s of a tight encounter. Athletic seem likely to be set up to be as tough as possible to break down, which could lead to a low scoring encounter against a side who struggled so badly for goals last season. A draw looks to be on the cards here.

 Prediction: Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Leganés

Half time: 1 - 1
Full time: 2 - 1
Shots:  17 - 10
Shots on target: 6 - 3
Corner Kicks: 6 - 2
Possession: 63% - 37%

A glut of yellow cards in this one. Referee Adrian Cordero taking the names of Bilbao's Yeray Alvarez, Yuri Berchiche, Raul Garcia and Iker Muniain, in addition to Raul Garcia, Guido Carillo, Gerard Gumbau, Jonathan Cristian Silva and Michael Santos of Leganes.

This was pretty encouraging for Bilbao overall. Impressive in possession and racking up plenty of efforts on goal, they could perhaps have been a little more ruthless, but this was nevertheless vastly better than much of the desperate fare they produced last season.

The opener came in the 27th minute following a corner from the left-hand side. Peru Nolaskoain getting across his man at the near post to plant an excellent header into the bottom right hand corner.

That lead was however pretty short-lived as Leganes bounced straight back. The visitors working the ball nicely into the area to tee up Gerard Gumbau. His initial effort was blocked but when the ball fell to Jonathan Christian Silva in the left-hand side of the area, he crashed his effort home via a not so slight deflection. 1-1 after 33 minutes. And that's the way it stayed until the break.

Indeed that's the way it stayed for almost the entirety of the match. Almost…..

For in the 93rd minute an excellent low ball into the area found Iker Muniain on the edge of the six-yard box. He shouldn't really have been allowed such time and space in such a position and he was hardly about to spurn the opportunity. One calm finish into the bottom right corner later and the points were headed to the home side. Delirium in the stands.
