An intriguing clash in Ligue 1 this week as two sides who endured contrasting fortunes last season clash at the Groupama Stadium. Whilst the Champions League came calling for hosts Lyon, visitors Strasbourg were lucky to escape with their Ligue 1 lives; only narrowly avoiding relegation.

If there is one thing which seems likely to handicap Lyon in their efforts to at least get closer to PSG this season, then it seems likely to be their consistency. Having impressed many with an opening day win over Amiens, they then undid much of that good work when losing away at Reims on Match Day 2. Back in front of their own fans, they will be keen to get that result out of their system.

Strasbourg struggled mightily last season, but already appear a much-improved side this time around. An opening win away at Bordeaux was an excellent effort, and they largely backed that up with another solid display when drawing at home to a decent Saint-Etienne outfit. This is nevertheless their toughest test of the season by some margin.

Talented youngster Amine Gouiri will be out for some time for Lyon following his unfortunate cruciate injury.

Ludovic Ajorque misses out for the visitors.

Strasbourg have begun the season encouragingly and are no lost cause here. That said, even in spite of that defeat last week, Lyon still look to be one of the elite sides in this league and can be expected to win most of their home games, including this one.

Ferland Mendy saw yellow for Lyon, with the Strasbourg duo of Ibrahima Sissoko and Adrien Thomasson also making their way into referee Amaury Delerue's notebook.

Following the disappointment of defeat away to Reims last weekend, this was much more like it from Lyon back on home turf. Ahead in the possession stats, they consistently racked up the efforts on goal, and never really gave Strasbourg a look in, restricting the visitors to just the one effort on target over the course of the ninety minutes.

Almost all of the early efforts in this game were coming from outside the box, as both sides were struggling to muster much in the way of clear cut chances. It was Mats Selz in the Strasbourg goal who was the busier of the two keepers though as Lyon slowly but surely began to assert their superiority.

The home side took the lead in the 42nd minute. Ferland Mendy's through ball from midfield didn't look to be intended for Martin Terrier, but that didn't stop him out speeding the defence to latch onto the ball in the left corner of the 18 yard box, opening up his body and finishing nicely into the far bottom corner. 1-0 at the break.

Lyon put the result beyond doubt in the 64th minute. Memphis Depay racing down the left-hand side and drawing two defenders towards him before playing the ball to Bertrand Traore on the right. Traore had a mixed night in front of goal but did take this well. Rounding the keeper and two defenders before slotting home.

No way back for Strasbourg as Lyon held on for the comfortable home win.
