One of the highlights of the opening weekend in the Bundesliga comes at Borussia-Park as heavyweights Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen lock horns.

The hosts will be looking to get off to a fast start this year as they bid to build and improve upon last season's ninth placed finish.

Leverkusen will also be looking for an improved showing. For all that they played some good stuff at times last season, they will have been most disappointed to miss out on a top four spot by the narrowest of margins. Breaking into that top four will be the big goal this season.

Conceding goals looked to be the main problem for Moenchengladbach last season, and they don't really look to have addressed that issue in the transfer market over the summer. The big acquisition came with the signing of much sought after front man Alassane Pléa from Nice.

Bayer have brought in exciting 18 year old left winger Paulinho to add a little spark to the offence, in addition to talented right back, Mitchell Weiser from Hertha. Other than that, the bulk of last seasons squad remains in place.

Leverkusen did the double over Moenchengladbach last season, keeping a clean sheet in each of their two games.

With the addition of Pléa we do see the home side getting on the scoresheet this time. Bayer look stronger overall though, especially in defence, and can take the points.

Dominic Kohr and Benjamin Henrichs made their way into referee Christian Dingert's notebook for the visitors, with Matthias Ginter doing likewise for Borussia Moenchengladbach.

A closely fought encounter this one with little to choose between the sides overall. If there was to be a winner though there's certainly a case to be made that it was Moenchengladbach who deserved to take the three points, and in the end, so they did.

The first big chance of the game fell to the visitors in the 16th minute. Leon Bailey crashing a header against the bar from around six yards out. The youngster may be a little disappointed not to have found the net.

An even bigger chance fell to Moenchengladbach in the 37th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Ramazan Ōzcan was up to the task though, diving to save Thorgan Hazard's effort. 0-0 at half time.

It was back to the penalty spot for the opening goal of the game, this time in the 55th minute. Hazard passed responsibility to Jonas Hoffman, who made no mistake in finding the bottom left corner.

Just three minutes later the home side were afforded a little breathing space in this encounter. Fabian Johnson and Rafael carving the Leverkusen defence open with a series of 1-2's on the edge of the area, ending with Raffael taking the keeper out of it and Johnson finishing from close range. Fine goal.

And that's the way it stayed as Leverkusen were unable to find a way back into the game despite their best efforts.

An encouraging start  for the hosts following what have been a couple of disappointing seasons.
