Something of a derby game this weekend in the UEFA Nations League as two nations who were previously joined as one do battle. It's Slovakia vs Czech Republic in League B Group 1.

It's been a largely disappointing few seasons for each of these sides, culminating in both nations missing out on the big summer showpiece in Russia.

It is the home team who are the significantly better side - at least according to the FIFA World Rankings - with Slovakia ranked 26 as opposed to 47 for the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic hold the edge in the head to head though with five wins to three for Slovakia.

Karel Jarolim is desperately seeking a winning system as he continues to juggle not only personnel but also seemingly being unable to settle upon the best formation for the side. With a number of starters from their last game - when thrashed 5-1 by Russia - not even in the squad this time around, expect more experimentation from the Czech coach here.

Slovakia aren't exactly in good form at the minute either, but narrow defeats to Morocco and Ukraine, as well as a draw here against the Netherlands are still better efforts than most of what the Czechs have displayed recently. It's a home win for us.

Prediction: Slovakia 2 - 1 Czech Republic

Half time: 0 - 0
Full time: 1 - 2
Shots:  12 - 7
Shots on target: 6 - 3
Corner Kicks: 7 - 5
Possession: 58% - 42%

Three bookings for each side in Slovakia. Referee Slavko Vincic taking the names of Tomas Hubocan, Martin Skrtel and Milan Skriniar of the home team, and Borek Dockal, Tomas Soucek and Theodore Gebre Selassie of the away side.

A big win for the Czechs in what is a big game for both nations. Slovakia were ahead on almost all of the stats; possession, shots and corners, but it was the away side who were in front where it counted - on the scoresheet.

The Czech's started the brighter of the two sides with Slovakia having keeper Martin Dubravka to thank for maintaining parity in the first half.

There was little Dubravka could do in the 52nd minute though when Borek Dockal's incisive through ball split the Slovakia defence to send Michael Krmencik racing through on goal. Krmencik finishing into the bottom right.

Slovakia were back on level terms just ten minutes later. A corner being swung in from the left to be met with a powerful near post header from Adam Nemec. Keeper Tomas Vaclik doing well to save but only palming the ball out to Marek Hamsik to gleefully smash home from around a yard.

The Czech winner came fourteen minutes from time. A cross from the left being overhit but retrieved by Dockal on the right flank. When Dockal then played the ball back into the area it was met with a thumping header into the top right by Patrik Schick. 1-2 final score.

This result went a little against form, and will no doubt be a big blow to Slovakia to lose at home against such big rivals. For the Czech's this is just what they needed.
