Mainz make the trip to Borussia Moenchengladbach in the last of the Match Day 8 fixtures in the Bundesliga, in a game the home side will be fully expecting to win.

With the other results falling as they have so far, a win for Borussia here could see them rise to as high as second in the standings.

It's been a mixed bag for Mainz so far this season, with two wins, two defeats and three draws from their opening seven fixtures. The most notable aspect of their games though is just how low scoring they have been, with five of their matches featuring one goal or fewer.

There was nothing to split these two sides last season with this game finishing up 1-1 and the reverse fixture ending in a goalless draw.

Borussia hold the edge on the injury front with Raffael the only confirmed absentee. Mainz must make do without René Adler, Gerrit Holtmann, Emil Berggreen, Niko Bungert and Robin Quaison.

Borussia are on something of a hot streak at home in the league, winning their last six on the spin, and scoring two or more goals in their last eight at home.

Mainz have been excellent defensively so far this season and will likely make Borussia work pretty hard here. With the injury edge in their favour though and high on confidence having stuffed Bayern Munich last time out, we fancy the home side will have enough to come out on top.

Referee Soren Storks reached for his notebook just twice in this one, taking the names of Jean-Paul Boetius and Aaron Martin of Mainz.

There wasn't all that much in this on the stats with Mainz actually leading the total shot count and only narrowly behind in the possession. This games all about taking your chances though and in that department the home side were much better.

Borussia took the lead in the 21st minute. Thorgan Hazard playing in Jonas Hoffman in the right of the area and Hoffman finishing across the keeper and in off the far post.

Both sides had chances in the remainder of the first half, notably the better of which fell to the home side. 1-0 at the break though.

The second came in the 53rd minute as Hazard and Hoffman teamed up again. The Belgian playing in a low ball towards the far post to find Hoffman lurking for the tap in.

Five minutes later this one was as good as over as Moenchengladbach struck again. Alassane Plea breaking down the left and picking out Hazard arriving towards the far post to smash high into the roof of the net.

In the 63rd minute Hoffman completed his hat-trick. Played in down the right by Florian Neuhaus he successfully rounded the outrushing keeper to finish into an empty net from just inside the area.

Mainz did go close on a couple of occasions in the remainder of the game, but then so to did the home side. Comfortable win in the end.

4-0 final score.

Another solid performance from Moenchengladbach who maintain second position in the standings. Mainz drop down to twelfth flowing this uncharacteristically heavy defeat.
