Rock bottom Stuttgart bid to belatedly get their season up and running as they travel to another side who have been performing below expectations so far this season as they head to the BayArena to take on Bayer Leverkusen.

Stuttgart won this game 1-0 last season with Leverkusen coming out on top 2-0 in the reverse fixture.

Just the one injury for the home side as Joel Pohjanpalo misses out. Stuttgart aren't so fortunate with Alexander Meyer, Holger Badstuber, Daniel Didavi, Jan Kliment, Borna Sosa and Berkay Özcan all ruled out for this one.

Leverkusen have been poor at home so far this season, winning only one of five and conceding three or more goals on three occasions. They do at least regularly get on the scoresheet themselves though having hit the target in each of their home games to date.

Stuttgart's away record makes for remarkably similar reading with the visitors having won just one of six and also having conceded three or more on three separate occasions. Things haven't been too much better at the other end of the pitch though as they have also failed to score three times.

Leverkusen are the better of these two sides overall, possess more of a goal threat and are less affected by injuries. All of which should combine to see the home side come out on top in this one.

Tin Jedvaj, Sven Bender and Lars Bender were all booked for the home side, with referee Robert Schroder also issuing the yellow card to Christian Gentner, Pablo Maffeo and Marc Kempf of Stuttgart.

Stuttgart were by no means awful in this game. A lack of a real goal threat continues to plague the side though and in the end this game went the way the stats suggested it would with the home side coming out on top via two relatively late goals.

Leverkusen were stringing together some pretty slick passing moves in and around the Stuttgart area in the opening period and creating the lions share of the chances. The best of these opportunities falling to Tin Jedvaj who could only fire over when arriving to meet a cross inside the six-yard box.

Stuttgart did come to life a little at the start of the second half; Mario Gomes forcing Lukas Hradecky into a smart stop with a pile-driver from range.

Kevin Volland should really have given Leverkusen the lead on the hour mark when blazing over an open goal from close range.

It was Vollland who made amends in the 76th minute when getting on the end of a cross following a short corner from the left to head in at the far post.

Then in the 83rd minute Volland made sure. Striking quickly on the break, Lucas Alario teed up Volland on the edge of the box to finish with an emphatic volley into the right-hand side.

Solid three points at home for Leverkusen who move up into 12th spot. Stuttgart continue to look in some trouble at the foot of the Bundesliga table.
