There's a bit on the line headed into this penultimate game in Group E in the Champion's League. Only a win for the hosts will ensure that they have matters in their own hands when it comes to topping the section. Defeat for Benfica would see the Portuguese side eliminated, whilst even a draw would leave them needing something of a miracle.

Bayern came out on top comfortably enough in the end in the reverse fixture when winning 2-0 in Portugal.

James Rodríguez, Corentin Tolisso and Thiago Alcántara are all out for the home side. Tyronne Ebuehi is the only confirmed absentee for the visitors.

Bayern Munich looked to have steadied the ship following something of rocky period, but arrive at this fixture on the back of two disappointing results. A 3-2 defeat away to league leaders Borussia Dortmund is fair enough but to score three at home and still only draw with Fortuna Düsseldorf poses questions about their defence.

Benfica who have won their past two in League and Cup will draw heart from Bayern's charity at the back in recent weeks, but will they be able to take advantage? Well, they were only beaten 1-0 at Ajax and did win at AEK Athens so they aren't without hope here.

Having won sixteen consecutively at home in the Champions League, Bayern have now lost two of their past nine.

Bayern have the best side on paper, but we don't trust them at present and wouldn't be too surprised to see an upset in this one.

Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery each received a booking to go with their goals for Bayern Munich. Alfa Semedo being the only Benfica player to have his name taken by referee Daniele Orsato.

Bayern Munich haven't always been on song of late, but they certainly were tonight as they simply blew Benfica away.

The opening goal came in the 13th minute and it was a belter too. Arjen Robben beating two men when cutting into the area from the right hand side before rifling an unstoppable effort into the top left corner from a pretty tight angle.

Robben struck again on the half hour mark. Sent scampering clear down the right, he this time cut inside, drifting towards the penalty spot before blasting into the top right corner.

By half time this was all over. Robert Lewandowski adding the third goal in the 36th minute. Joshua Kimmich swinging in a cross following a corner and the Polish hitman rising highest to head into the left-hand side of the goal. 3-0 at the break.

Benfica pulled one back in the first minute of the second half. Nice 1-2 between Gedson Fernandes and Jonas seeing the former clean through in the right of the area and finishing well high to the left.

No way back though and Bayern reasserted their authority in the 51st minute. Kimmich sending the corner over and once again finding the head of Lewandowski to finish into the right hand side this time.

The final goal of the game came in the 76th minute. Franck Ribery finding David Alaba towards the left by-line in the area, Alaba laying the ball back towards the penalty spot and Ribery finishing into the bottom right.

Bayern will now definitely qualify from this group, as will Ajax. Bayern will also stay stop of the section should they avoid defeat away at Ajax on Match Day 6.
