Lille are proving to be best of the rest in the vain pursuit of PSG in Ligue 1 this season. This week the second placed side welcome twelfth placed Reims to their Stade Pierre-Mauroy home.

These sides last met in Ligue 1 back in the 2015/16 season with Lille winning this game 2-0 and Reims coming out on top 1-0 in the reverse fixture.

Adama Soumaoro is the only confirmed absentee for Lille at this stage. Reims must do without Tristan Dingome and Marvin Martin.

Lille may lie second but they have hit the buffers just a little of late with just one win in their past five. They are consistently good here at home though with nine wins and two draws from their past eleven fixtures. They have scored at least twice in nine of those eleven games.

Reims are playing like a typical mid-table side at present, winning one week and losing the next and really just treading water. Good win on peak form, distinctly average the rest of the time. Most of their good results do tend to come at home, with just the two wins in their past fifteen on the road in Ligue 1. They have failed to score in three of their past four away games.

Lille may have been stuttering a little, but they can nevertheless be trusted to beat the teams they are expected to at home and should have too much in the final third for Reims.

Jose Fonte was the sole Lille player booked in this one. Thomas Foket, Romain Métanire and Eduardo Mendy of Reims all had their names taken by referee Willy Delajod.

Not much to separate these two sides at all on the night. Lille did edge it on the stats but only just, and in the end,  Reims were only moments away from producing an excellent and effective away performance, only to be undone at the last.

The home side had marginally the better of it early and certainly came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half. Xeka firing a twenty yarder at goal which had the keeper beaten all ends up but came back off the post. 0-0 at half-time.

It was Reims who struck first in the 64th minute. Alaixys Romao showing good strength when a cross was deflected to him in the left hand side of the eighteen-yard box, holding off his marker and playing in a low ball for Remi Oudin to finish from close range.

And that's the way it stayed…..until the sixth minute of stoppage time. Clumsy challenge from Romain Métanire to bundle over Fodé Ballo Touré inside the area and the referee pointing to the spot. Nicolas Pepe stepping up to convert into the bottom right. 1-1 final score.

Lille's pursuit of PSG is undoubtedly in vain anyway, but they will nevertheless view this as two points dropped at home, particularly with the race for the top three positions looking like being pretty tight. They do stay second for now but have played a game more than Montpellier and Lyon who are within striking distance in third and fourth spot respectively.  Reims move up a spot into eleventh.
