Two sides fighting battles at opposite ends of the table lock horns at the Veltins-Arena on Match Day 18 in the Bundesliga, as fifth bottom Schalke play host to sixth placed Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg beat Schalke 2-1 at home in the first game between the sides this season. Schalke came out narrow 1-0 winners in this game last season.

Schalke do have a few absentees ahead of this one. Amine Harit, Breel Embolo, Suat Serdar, Hamza Mendyl, Guido Burgstaller and Franco Di Santo will all be missing here. Wolfsburg must make do without Joshua Guilavogue, Ignacio Camacho and Daniel Ginczek.

Schalke have certainly steadied the ship following a positively desperate start to the season , but are a far cry from last seasons side. Still only four points clear of the relegation zone, they can't afford to be complacent headed in the second half of the season. They did win well at Stuttgart in their most recent game and will be looking to translate that win into a positive display here at home where they have won only three of eight so far.

Schalke may well have their work cut out here though as they face a Wolfsburg side who are in comfortably their best form of the season. A run of five wins and a draw in their past six now sees Bruno Labbadia's men within three points of the top four.

Wolfsburg wont lack for motivation here, are a better side than Schalke and have fewer injury concerns. Away win.

Just the one booking in this one with Weston McKennie of the home side being the only player to have his name taken by referee Manuel Grafe.

A pretty even game as we can see from the stats, and whilst Wolfsburg did dominate for spells, it was Schalke who made more use of the ball when the had it and the home side did probably just about deserve the three points on the day.

Wolfsburg were close to getting off to a dream start as Admir Mehmedi forced a fine save from Alexander Nubel with a bullet header in only the fifth minute.

Then in the eighth minute William got himself in all sorts of trouble inside his own area. First dithering on, and then losing the ball, the right back lunged in on Allessandro Scopf in an effort to make amends and the referee pointed to the spot. Daniel Caligiuri stepping up to finish into the left-hand side and give the home side the lead.

The equaliser arrived in the 20th minute. Admir Mehmedi getting on the end of a cross from the right and placing an effort back across goal from the left. His side foot effort beat the keeper but not the far post. No matter though, as following in was Elvis Rexhbecaj to finish into the bottom right from around eight yards. 1-1 at the break.

The home side's winner came in the 78th minute and it was that man Caligiuri again. Weston Mckennie - who looked dangerous throughout - bursting through midfield and finding Caligiuri in the right-hand side of the area, Caligiuri cutting back onto his left and smashing an effort into the top left corner. 2-1 final score.

Big win for Schalke who do now look to have put those early season woes firmly behind them. They move up to twelfth and are now a healthy seven points clear of the relegation places. Wolfsburg drop down to sixth.
