One of the more evenly contested matches on paper on Match Day 21 in Ligue 1 takes place at Roazhon Park as eighth placed Rennes play host to sixth placed Montpellier. With just two points between the sides, Rennes will be looking to overhaul their visitors with a win in this one.

The sides couldn't be separated in their first meeting this season, with the game in Montpellier ending in a 2-2 draw. This game also finished all square last season with the teams playing out a 1-1 draw.

Abdoulaye Diallo, Ludovic Baal and Romain Danzé miss out for the home side. Montpellier have the luxury of having a fully ft squad from which to select.

Rennes four game winning streak was brought to a halt with defeat at Guingamp last week, but they have nevertheless been moving in the right direction overall and will be keen to get back on track with a win in front of their own fans here. They haven't exactly been reliable at home with just four wins from nine, but have won their two most recent fixtures here, scoring six and keeping back to back clean sheets.

Montpellier started the season in excellent style with just the one defeat in their opening tweve fixtures. They have ben struggling a little of late though with only one win in their last seven. To their credit they have held their own on the road so far this term, with just the two defeats in their opening nine away games.

This is a tough one to call, but the overall impression is that Rennes are firmly on the up whilst Montpellier are stuttering, we will take a narrow home win in this one.

Two bookings apiece at Roazhon Park with referee Jerome Miguelgorry taking the names of Damien Da Silva and Ismaila Sarr of the home side and Rubern Aguilar and Vitorino Hilton of Montpellier.

This looked like being one of the more evenly contested matches of the weekend in Ligue 1, and in the end so it proved. Rennes did just shade in terms of general play and total shots, but this was a day when defences came out on top as neither team could ultimately find a way through.

Montpellier weren't able to create much at all in the first half with the home side largely restricting them to efforts from range. Rennes weren't much better though, a snap volley from Benjamin Bourigeaud from around twelve yards which produced a comfortable save from Dimitry Bertaud being as close as they came. 0-0 at the break.

That the score remained level in the second half was largely thanks to the woodwork. Florent Mollet the first to hit the frame when rifling in a 25 yard effort which found the left hand upright.

Hatem Ben Arfa was then denied by the goal frame twice in as many minutes. Firstly through a free kick from the right which may have had the keeper beaten but could only clip the outside of the right hand post. Then an even better effort when jinking his way through midfield, cutting back inside onto his left and curling an effort which thumped the left hand upright. Unlucky. 0-0 final score.

No change for Montpellier in the standings, they stay sixth and five points off the Champion's League positions. Rennes slip down a spot to ninth position.
