Real Madrid's recent upturn in form has now lifted them back up into the Champion's League positions. They sit fourth headed into this game but will move above Sevilla and into third should they avoid defeat in this one. Lying in wait at the RCDE Stadium are slumping fourteenth placed Espanyol.

The past two games between these sides have finished up with a 1-0 score-line. Real winning the game at the Bernabeu earlier this season, and Espanyol coming out on top by that score-line in this game last season.

David López, Naldo, Óscar Duarte and Hernán Pérez miss out for the home side. Real Madrid will be without Gareth Bale, Keylor Navas, Marco Asensio and Jesús Vallejo.

Espanyol are on an abysmal run at present having lost eight of their past nine in La Liga, with the only bright spot in that run being a 1-0 victory here against Leganés. Now only four points above the drop zone, they will need to stop the rot soon if the are to avoid being well and truly sucked into the relegation battle.

Real have lost only one of their last seven in La Liga and will be looking to carry on that form into the second half of the season. It's been a mixed bag away from home overall, but Real have now lost only one of their last five, picking up wins at Real Betis, Huesca and Celta Vigo.

It's tough to see Espanyol getting anything in almost any game at present and they seem unlikely to cope with this improving Real outfit.

Marc Roca, Sergio Garcia and Alex Lopez were all booked for the home side. Raphael Varane was shown a straight red for Real in the 72nd minute, with Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Nacho and Thibaut Courtois also having their names taken by referee Jesus Gil Manzano.

Real shot out of the blocks here and took the lead in just the fourth minute. Luka Modric bursting through midfield and all the way into the Espanyol area. His effort was well saved by keeper Diego Lopez, but only into the path of Karim Benzema who fired in the rebound from six yards out to the left.

By the quarter hour mark Real were two to the good. A short corner played to Modric who sent a cross into the box. Sergio Ramos directing his header into the right hand side from the left corner of the six yard box.

The home side pulled one back in the 25th minute. A deflected shot from the edge of the area following a corner falling perfectly for Leo Baptistao to the right-hand side around ten yards out. Baptistao going for power and smashing an effort high and in.

Real restored their two-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time. Benzema playing in a low ball from the left and when it was only half cleared it was he who latched onto it to curl a lovely finish into the bottom right from the left hand side of the area. 1-3 at the break.

Real then made certain of the points in the 67th minute. Lucas Vazquez finding Gareth Bale in the area around ten yards out. Smart turn and finish into the bottom right from the Welshman.

Espanyol did grab a consolation in the 81st minute. A lofted ball from Marc Roca seeing Roberto Rosales beat the offside trap, control on his chest and smash a volley from ten yards high into the net. 2-4 final score.

Real stay third and ten points behind leaders Barcelona. Espanyol drop down one place to fifteenth.
