One of the more intriguing fixtures on Match Day 24 in Ligue 1 comes at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as second placed Lille play host to sixth placed Montpellier.

Nine points clear of fourth, Lille do appear to have a place in the top three locked up, but will be keen to avoid Champion's League qualifying if possible and as such need to keep winning if they are to hold off Lyon who are only three points back.

The Champion's League looks a long shot for Montpellier now, but they are only three points off fourth and a place in the Europa League.

Montpellier picked up a point in a 1-1 draw in this game last season. Lille won the reverse of this fixture this season though when coming away from Montpellier with a 1-0 victory.

No excuses on the injuries or suspensions front, with no confirmed absentees for either side at present.

Lille are flying along very nicely at present, losing just once in their last ten in Ligue 1, they will be seeking a sixth league win on the spin here. They have won eight of twelve at home so far this season, losing just once.

Montpellier aren't playing badly at present, but those early season wins seem to be turning into draws just now, with five of their past seven in the league ending up all square. A draw certainly wouldn't be a bad result here, but they are going to need to start winning soon if they are to avoid their season sputtering out. They have been good away from home. Losing only two of eleven to date.

Whilst Lille seem to be at the top of the game, Montpellier look a notch below their best at present and we see the home side picking up the points.

Prediction: Lille 3 - 1 Montpellier

Half time:  0 - 0
Full time: 0 - 0
Shots:  12 - 8
Shots on target: 3 - 2
Corner Kicks: 1 - 4
Possession: 62% - 38%

No goals in this one, but each side did manage three bookings. Xeka, Youssouf Kone and Jose Fonte of Lille, and Vitorino, Damien La Tallec and Daniel Congre of Montpellier being the men to have their names taken by referee Ruddy Buquet.

Montpellier likely would have taken a point going into this, and in truth this was one of their better performances in recent weeks. Even so they were still a little fortunate to come away with a share of the spoils. Lille bossing possession and the shot count and striking the woodwork twice without being able to find a way through.

Lille really are a frighteningly quick side on the counterattack at times, and Montpellier looked in danger of being picked off every time they pushed forward. Nicolas Pépé came closest in the opening period, once with a 25-yard free kick which whistled just over and then when seeing a sliding effort at the far post kept out by keeper Benjamin Lecomte. 0-0 at the break.

Jonathan Ikone was the man on the end of another Lille break at the beginning of the second half but could only hit his twelve-yard effort narrowly wide.

Pépé went close when cutting in onto his right foot on the left edge of the area and rattling an effort against the foot of the left hand upright.

Despite mounting pressure, Montpellier held firm and this one finished goalless. A result the away side will no doubt have been happier with than the home team.

No change for either side in the Ligue 1 table. Lille stay second and four points clear of Lyon in third. Montpellier remain sixth and two points of the Europa League position.
