Match Day 26

Last five matches form: D L W W L
Average goals per match: 1.36

Marseille:
Last five matches form: L L W W W

Top Scorer: Florian Thauvin (12)

Champion's League football would no doubt have been the main target for Marseille this season, and considering the inconsistency they have displayed, they are perhaps fortunate to still be in with a shot. They do still have six points to make up on Lyon though and as such can't afford many more slip-ups. Florian Thauvin and co face a tough one on Match Day 26 though as they travel to Roazhon Park to take on Rennes, who themselves aren't completely out of the European race.

There was nothing to split the sides in the reverse of this fixture, with the game in Marseille ending in a 2-2 draw. Marseille were comfortable 3-0 victors in this game last season though.

Marseille undoubtedly hold the edge when it comes to injuries and suspensions with no confirmed absentees at present. Rennes must do without Abdoulaye Diallo, Jordan Siebatcheu, Ludovic Baal and Romain Danzé.

Having threatened to come with a run on a few occasions, Rennes are now seven points off the top five and need to pick up the pace quickly.

Rennes are going well at home at present though having not conceded a goal in each of their last five games here, picking up wins in four of those fixtures.

Marseille will be looking for their fourth Ligue 1 win on the spin here as they bid to gate-crash those top three positions. They haven't been great away from home though in winning only five of 13, keeping only two clean sheets in the process.

These two sides are amongst the most unpredictable in the division. Marseille do boast the better quality, but home advantage may even things out and we see this ending in a draw.

Prediction: Rennes 2 - 2 Marseille

Plenty to keep referee Mikael Lesage busy at Roazhon Park with eight cards dished out in all. Benjamin Andre, Benjamin Bourigeaud, Ismaïla Sarr and Jeremy Gelin all being booked for the home side. Mario Balotelli, Valere Germain and Maxime Lopez all saw yellow for Marseille who also had Jordan Amavi shown a straight red in the second minute of stoppage time.

Rennes were the better side overall on the day, applying the most pressure throughout, being ahead on possession and comfortably leading the shot count. They only had the one goal to show for their efforts though, and in the end that wasn't enough to pick up the three points.

The home side struck early here, taking the lead in just the seventh minute. Romain Del Castillo's corner kick from the right-hand side being headed goal wards by Benjamin Andre and taking a hefty deflection off Mario Balotelli on its way to finding the bottom right corner.

Clement Grenier tested Steve Mandanda with a well struck free kick from range, but no further scoring in the first half.

The equaliser came in the 56th minute and it was oh so simple for Marseille. A short corner from the left played to Florian Thauvin who had time to pick out his cross. Valerie Germain meeting the ball to head home at the near post from a few yards.

Rennes had the best of it from there on in. Jordan Amavi possibly denying a goal when opting to rugby tackle Adrien Hunou in stoppage time. 1-1 final score.

Marseille are fifth after this result and still five points off the Champion's League positions. Rennes lie in ninth spot and six points off the top four.
