Saint-Étienne's defeat to Montpellier last weekend did have the look of a result which may well prove fatal to their late Champion's League charge. Now four points behind third placed Lyon, they are going to need significant help. It's not quite over yet though, and all they can do is concentrate on winning their remaining fixtures, starting here with the visit of seventh placed Nice to the Stade Geoffory-Guichard. A win here will at least secure Europa League qualification.

Nice have nothing of significance to play for. The fact that they sit as high as they do is pretty remarkable considering rock bottom Guingamp are the only side to have scored fewer goals in Ligue 1 this season. There can't be too many more well organised sides than Patrick Vieira's men.

There was nothing to split the sides in a 1-1 draw in the reverse of this fixture. Saint-Étienne ran out 3-0 winners in the game here last season.

Having gone unbeaten in their first ten at home, Saint-Étienne have now lost four of their last eight here, including that defeat to Montpellier last time out. They have failed to score in three of their last six, but have only conceded more than once twice all season.

Nice have only won five of eighteen on the road, and only one of their last 11. They have impressively conceded one or fewer goals in 15 of eighteen away from home.

As with the majority of Nice games, this will likely be tight. Saint-Étienne have the greater need for the points though and may just nick it.

Prediction: Saint-Étienne 1 - 0 Nice

Half time: 1 - 0
Full time: 3 - 0
Shots:  9 - 19
Shots on target: 4 - 5
Corner Kicks: 2 - 9
Possession: 34% - 66%

Three bookings in this one, all for the away side, with referee Antony Gautier taking the names of Racine Coly, Pierre Lees Melou and Mickael Le Bihan.

The final score certainly doesn't give a true reflection as to how this game went. Miles ahead on possession, and recording more than double the total shots of the home side, the usually defensively resolute Nice somehow found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 drubbing.

Nice were really threatening early on, particularly from set-pieces, with the home side being saved by some desperate defending and the woodwork.

It was via a set piece that the opening goal arrived in the 25th minute, and it was Saint-Étienne who grabbed it. A free kick from deep on the right finding Robert Beric in acres of space around six yards out. Beric having time to control on his thigh and guide a volley home. 1-0 at the break.

The second came in the 65th minute. Romain Hamouma found in space on the right and whipping in a superb low cross to the edge o the six-yard box. Beric arriving to slot home into the bottom right.

Nine minutes from time any slight doubt as to the destination of the points was erased. Arnaud Nordin turning well and laying the ball into the path of Hamouma around 20 yards out and slightly to the right. Excellent first time strike from Hamouma into the bottom left corner.

Important win for Saint-Etienne. With Lyon also winning they no longer have a shot at the Champion's League headed into the final day of the season, but they have at least secured a Europa League spot with a game to spare. Nice drop down to eighth.
