Potentially one of the most entertaining encounters on the opening weekend in Ligue 1 comes at the Stade de la Mosson, as Montpellier play host to Rennes.

Montpellier fared better of these two sides last season, finishing in sixth spot. Rennes finished back in tenth and will be hoping to bridge the gap to the top six this time around.

There was precious little to split the sides in their two meetings last term with both games ending in a draw - 2-2 here and 0-0 at Roazhon Park.

Téji Savanier looks like being the only absentee for the home side. Rennes will definitely be without Jordan Siebatcheu, whilst the three players to have taken part in the African Cup Of Nations - Hamari Traoré, Ramy Bensebaini and M'Baye Niang - may well be given more time to recover.

There have been ins and outs at Montpellier over the summer, but the squad overall looks to boast a similar level of quality as last season. Andy Delort in particularly looks a shrewd acquisition as a proven goal scorer in this league.

Rennes on the other hand do look to be weaker than last season. Hatem Ben Arfa wasn't always consistent, but did bring an x-factor. He is now departed whilst the deadline day sale of Ismaila Sarr looks to be a major blow.

This game didn't see a winner last season, but we would be a little surprised were Montpellier not to come out on top this time around.

Arnaud Souquet, Joris Chotard and Andy Delort were all booked for the home side. Faitout Maouasa, Jordan Siebatcheu and Clement Grenier of Rennes also had their names taken by referee Willy Delajod, whilst Flavien Tait was shown a straight red card in the 69th minute.

Montpellier did lead the way in the stats here, but not really to a dominant degree. A failure to create enough real clear-cut chances, missing the ones they did have - headlined by a spurned opportunity from the spot - ultimately cost them dear. Rennes for their part didn't create that much either, but crucially did take one of the few chances which did come their way.

That one chance came very early in the game. A free kick from deep on the left-hand side being lofted in towards the far post. Damien Da Silva the man rising highest to nod back across goal. Jeremey Morel initially looked to have mis-controlled around six yards out, but it fell kindly for him to slot into the bottom right corner from close range. The visitors a goal up after just six minutes.

Montpellier were comfortably ahead in the shot count for the remainder of the first half - and indeed for the match as a hole - but were struggling to create the clear-cut opportunity they needed.

0-1   at the break.

The home side then did have a golden opportunity to equalise on the hour mark when awarded a penalty kick. Andy Delort stepping up but firing his effort too close to keeper Romain Salin who made the save with his legs.

It was backs to the wall stuff for Rennes following the dismissal of Tait, but they held on for a big win  on the road.
