Undoubtedly the most improved side in Ligue 1 last season, Lille finished an outstanding second in the end. The question is, how close will they get to repeating that feat now that 22 goal hitman Nicolas Pépé has departed for Arsenal? First up for Lille is this home clash with Nantes who endured a truly traumatic time of things in 2018/19.

Lille did the double over Nantes last season. Both games were relatively close though with this fixture ending 2-1 and the reverse 3-2.

One of the downsides of a season such as that experienced by Lille last season is the fact that it draws significant attention to the talent within the squad, and sure enough there have been departures over the summer, headlined by the switch of Nicolas Pépé to Arsenal. His goals and pace on the counter are likely to prove very difficult to replace. They have at least re-invested some of the funds though and it will be intriguing to see how the youth of Victor Osimhen and Timothy Weah fare.

The big loss for Nantes was the departure of defensive lynchpin Diego Carlos who leaves for Sevilla. That money doesn't look to have been reinvested sufficiently to our eyes and they may just take a backwards step this season.

Lille likely won't be quite so good as they were last season. They should however still have too much for this Nantes outfit, particularly in the season opener in front of their own fans.

Jonathan Bamba and Tim Weah were booked for the home side at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, with referee Mikael Lesage also taking the names of Fabio, Charles Traore, Molla Wague and Nicolas Pallois of Nantes.

Not too much in this on the stats, with the visitors if anything having the better of it. You have to take your chances in this game though and it was Lille who took the points thanks to a debut double strike from Victor Osimhen.

Lille struck first in the 19th minute. A long ball booted out of defence and Osimhen showing good pace and control to latch onto it, outrun his marker and race into the right of the area. Good composure too, to finish into the left-hand side from around seven yards out towards the right corner of the six-yard box.

Nantes were certainly in the game throughout and gave as good as they got in the remainder of the first half without being able to find the scoresheet. 1-0 at the break.

Six minutes into the second half though the visitors were back on level terms. The ball breaking to Andrei Girotto around 25 yards from goal. His low effort looked to be travelling wide, but a wicked deflection off Zeki Celik redirected the ball towards goal, leaving the keeper wrong-footed and with no chance.

Ten minutes from time the home side won it. Not the best defending from Nantes as they repeatedly failed to effectively clear their lines. Celik firing in a low ball from the right which Osimhen initially looked to have wasted with a heavy first touch. The frontman was still first to the ball though and, whilst the angle appeared very tight on the right around seven yards out, he lashed in a power packed strike to beat the keeper high at his near post. 2-1 final score.
