Liverpool's bid to go one better than last season got off to a positive start at home last weekend, and Match Day 2 sees the Red's travel to the south coast for their first away fixture of the season to take on Southampton.

Liverpool did the double over a fair number of sides last season and Southampton were one of them. The Reds coming out on top 3-1 in this game and 3-0 at Anfield.

Southampton's optimism for the season ahead took a pretty severe dent on the opening weekend as they were convincingly beaten 3-0 away to Burnley. They will be hopeful of getting their season up and running now playing in front of their own fans, but couldn't have asked for a much tougher assignment.

Liverpool were ultimately convincing winners over Norwich City, but anything other than an easy win would have been a disappointment really, and fans may be a little concerned with how vulnerable they looked at the back at times.

Southampton may have a slight freshness edge having had the week off whereas Liverpool had to travel to Istanbul to take on Chelsea in the Super Cup Final. With this game coming so early in the season though, Liverpool shouldn't be anywhere near feeling any kind of fatigue though.

Southampton were so poor last weekend that it's difficult to see them getting anything here.

Oriol Romeu and Moussa Djenepo of Southampton were booked for the home side, with referee Andre Marriner also taking the name of Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mané came into the Liverpool starting line-up, together with Adrian in place of injured keeper Alisson. Adrian had a hairy moment in the early stages when firing a Virgil van Dijk back pass straight against James Ward-Prowse and being pretty lucky to see it deflect wide.

Adrian may not have been at his best then, but he certainly was when denying a point-blank range Maya Yoshida header following a corner in the 21st minute.

There was a pretty strong argument to be made that it was Southampton who were the better side in the first half. Che Adams had an excellent chance with a header, but sending his effort over.

It can often prove costly to not take your chances - particularly against the big sides - and so it proved for Southampton here as Liverpool struck on the stroke of half-time. World class from Mané. The Senegal man found in the left corner of the eighteen-yard box, making space for the shot and firing a beauty into the top right corner. 0-1 at the break.

With Southampton pushing forward more, Liverpool were beginning to look very dangerous on the counter - Salah and Firmino both missing decent chances before the European champions made it two in the 71st minute. Southampton the masters of their own demise when coughing up possession eighteen yards out on their right. Firmino still had plenty to do when found in the area by Mané, but did well to drift across two defenders and fire into the bottom left from around 18 yards in a central area.

Ex-Liverpool man Danny Ings then pulled one back for the hosts in the 83rd minute. Adrian not getting away with his dodgy clearing this time - playing the ball straight off the closing Ings, and this time seeing the ball hit the back of the net. No way back for the Saints though, 1-2 final score.
