Borussia Dortmund significantly closed the gap between themselves and Bayern Munich last season, but ultimately the campaign ended in disappointment as, despite having led for so long, they were finally reeled in by Bayern. They will be hoping to put up at least as much of a fight this time around, and first up its this home clash with Augsburg.

Neutral fans will likely be happy if this game plays out as it did last season with Dortmund coming out on top by the odd goal in seven on that occasion. Augsburg gained revenge with a 2-1 success in the reverse fixture.

There have been comings and goings at Dortmund over the summer, but overall they look to have taken a step forward, with Mats Hummels, Thorgan Hazard, Nico Schulz and Julian Brandt all looking high quality additions.

Plenty of changes at Augsburg too. Tomas Koubek brought in between the sticks, and no fewer than seven additions of players aged 22 or under as the focus has turned to youth. On the downside, three centre-backs have left the club, headlined by Martin Hinteregger.

Dortmund came mightily close to landing the Bundesliga title last season, and if anything look even better prepared to launch an assault this time around. Augsburg have plenty of promise in their squad, but do look vulnerable at the back and may come undone at the Westfalenstadion.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 5 - 1 Augsburg

No bookings at the Westfalenstadion as referee Frank Willenborg kept his cards in his pocket throughout.

A flying start for the visitors, with Augsburg taking the lead in the very first minute. Really nice passing move too, working the ball to the left-hand side. From there Mads Pedersen drilled in a fine low ball to find Florian Niederlechner on the edge of the six-yard box. Simple finish for Niederlechner into the left-hand side.

Sadly, that's as good as it got for Augsburg, and the hosts were back on level terms just two minutes later. Jadon Sancho playing in Marco Reus towards the right goal line. Keeper Tomas Koubek blocking Reus's cutback with his leg, but only into the path of the lurking Paco Alcácer who slotted home from close range.

Dortmund were well on top from there on in but - largely thanks to Koubek - Augsburg managed to make it into the break on level terms.

Six minutes into the second half the home side led for the first time in the game. Axel Witsel's low ball in from the left making its all the way through to Sancho towards the right corner of the six-yard box. The Englishman taking a touch and finishing into the bottom left.

Six minutes later it was three. Koubek flapping at a cross in from the right. Alcácer playing the ball inside to Reus - taking the keeper out of the game - and Reus finishing into the left-hand side from 14 yards.

Just two minutes after that, this one really was all over. Sancho dancing in the left of the area before playing a quick low ball to Alcácer around 14 yards out. First time finish from Alcácer into the top right. Koubek getting a hand to it, but unable to keep it out.

Eight minutes from time Dortmund made it five. Nice pick-out from Witsel to play in Julian Brandt with a dinked ball over the top. Smart finish from Brandt too - first time on the volley into the bottom left from seven yards out to the right-hand side. 5-1 final score.
