We look to be in for a cracker at the Groupama Stadium on Match Day 18 in Ligue 1 as seventh placed Lyon play host to a Rennes outfit who are currently riding high in fourth spot.

Following a desperately poor start, Lyon are now beginning to look more like the sum of their parts and will actually move above Rennes in the standings should they pick all three points in this one. Only four points off third as it stands, Rennes will of course have at least half an eye on those Champion's League positions.

The sides swapped away wins in the league last season - Rennes winning this one 2-0 and Lyon coming out on top 1-0 in the reverse. The most recent meeting came here in the French Cup last season - Rennes edging a 3-2 thriller on that occasion.

Léo Dubois, Youssouf Kone and Marcelo are expected to miss out for the home side, with Jakob Johansson and Jeremy Gelin side-lined for Rennes.

Usually a tough place to come, Lyon have actually only won three of eight at the Groupama so far this season - slipping up in a 1-0 loss to Lille here last time. They have scored one or fewer in five of eight here.

Rennes haven't been particularly good on the road either, with just the one win in their last six. They have scored more than once in only two of their eight away fixtures.

This looks a bit tricky. Lyon do have the better squad on paper though, and look to finally be headed in the right direction again now. We will take the hosts to make something of a statement with a win in this one.

Three bookings for each side at the Groupama Stadium, with referee Benoit Bastien taking the names of Bertrand Traore, Joachim Anderson and Maxence Caqueret of the home side and Mbaye Niang, Benjamin Bourigeaud and Joris Gnagnon of Rennes.

Rennes were pressing early in this one; nice work from Raphinha down the right flank and a decent cutback to Mbaye Niang - not an easy chance but he will still have been disappointed to only blaze over the bar.

Houchem Aouar of Lyon forced a decent stop from Edouard Mendy with an effort from range, but other than that the home side didn't threaten too much in the opening period.  Home keeper Anthony Lopes meanwhile had to be at his best to repel a Benjamin Bourigeaud free kick which seemed destined for the left-hand side of the goal. Goalless at the break.

Lyon suffered an injury blow with Memphis Depay failing to emerge for the second half.

Rennes were looking the more dangerous side, but were continually let down by the final ball or finish, and then six minutes from time they were grateful to keeper Mendy for keeping things all square with an excellent double stop.

And then in the 89th minute the visitors won it. Eduardo Camavinga taking up possession around 35 yards from goal in the left channel and advancing forward; cutting inside two markers and into the area, the deep-lying midfielder slotted home into the bottom left from ten-yards or so. The keeper getting something on it but being unable to keep it out. 0-1 it finished.

A bump in the road for the recent resurgence of Lyon. They drop down a spot to eighth on the back of this defeat. Rennes keep the good times rolling and maintain their hold on fourth spot, cutting the gap to the Champion's League positions back down to just the one point.
