Fully 13 points adrift of Bayern Munich last term, RB Leipzig didn't exactly run the champions close. They were nevertheless best of the rest in second spot. First up this time around it's this trip to the MEWA ARENA to take on a Mainz outfit who ended last season in 12th spot.

Mainz have been hit in the summer transfer window with the loss of Robin Quaison, which following the departure of Jean-Philippe Mateta may leave them a little light up front. Leipzig in contrast have significantly upgraded in the forward positions with the acquisition of André Silva from Eintracht Frankfurt. They did however of course lose their manager Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich, with Jesse March coming in from RB Salzburg to replace him.

It was honours even between the sides last season with Mainz winning 3-2 in this one and Leipzig coming out on top 3-1 in the reverse fixture.

Anton Stach is suspended for the home side with Karim Onisiwo also set to miss out. RB will be without Marcel Halstenberg, Marcelo Saracchi, Dani Olmo and Marcel Sabitzer who may be on his way out.

Mainz won only four of 17 at home last season, scoring more than once only four times and keeping only two clean sheets.

Leipzig won a solid eight of 17 on their travels, scoring two or more in nine of those games.

The absence of Sabitzer is undoubtedly a blow, but Mainz do look a weaker side this season too and we give the away side the edge in the final third in this one.

Prediction: Mainz 1 - 2 RB Leipzig
