One of the more intriguing matchups on Match Day 5 in the Bundesliga comes at the MEWA ARENA as Mainz play host to Freiburg.

Sitting fourth and fifth respectively headed into this game, both sides have begun the season in a positive manner and will be looking to keep that overall momentum going in this one.

Mainz did the double over Freiburg last season, winning 1-0 in this one and coming out on top 3-1 in the reverse fixture.

Just the one confirmed absentee for each side at present. Moussa Nìakhite is out for the home side with Jonathan Schmid side-lined for the visitors.

Mainz are two from two at home this season, keeping a clean sheet in both wins over RB Leipzig and Greuther Fürth. Also victorious at Hoffenheim last time out, the only blip has been a loss on the road at Bochum.

Freiburg meanwhile are yet to taste defeat this season, picking up a draw on the road at Arminia Bielefeld and at home to Cologne, and wins over Borussia Dortmund at home and ans Stuttgart on their travels.

This looks like a mightily tough one to call. We give Mainz the defensive edge, but Freiburg possibly look the more potent attacking force at present. Mainz do have the home advantage, but that does bring an onus to attack and we quite like Freiburg on the counter.

Prediction: Mainz 1 - 2 Freiburg

Analysis:
Defences very much on top in this one, particularly for Mainz who restricted Freiburg to just the one shot on target over the course of the ninety minutes. Pretty tight overall with little in it on the stats and no real surprise that it ended up all square.

Freiburg slightly the brighter of the two sides in the opening exchanges, forcing a couple of set pieces and looking to have a pretty decent shout for a penalty following one corner from the right, with Nico Schlotterbeck seeming to be pushed in the back as he attempted to win the ball.

A pretty low-key opening period from an attacking perspective overall though, with the only half chance for Mainz coming when the ball dropped for Jean-Paul Boetius on the edge of the area, however he could only volley fairly weakly straight at the keeper.

Mainz the quickest out of the traps in the second half and having the first big chance when Jonathan Burkardt was slipped through in the left channel moved into the area and fired low to the left-hand side, only to be denied by the outstretched boot of Mark Flekken.

Still Mainz pressed. Jerry St. Juste with an excellent flick to play himself in in the left of the area but being well smothered by the rushing out Flekken.

Back came Freiburg. Some poor defending seeing the ball fall to Vincenzo Griffo just inside the area to the left. Griffo going for the curler towards the top right but Robin Zentmer getting across to save well.

Goalless it finished.

League Standings: Mainz fourth on the back of this. Freiburg sixth.
