Heading into the closing stages of the Bundesliga season, and whilst Schalke are of course now doomed, who will fill the two remaining relegation spots remains to be seen, and with only five points separating thirteenth from 17th, this battle looks like going down to the wire.

All of which makes this clash at the WWK Arena one of the biggest fixtures of the weekend, as 14th placed Augsburg play host to 15th placed Werder Bremen. With Augsburg only two points clear of the drop zone, and Werder Bremen only being kept out of the bottom three on goal difference, there's plenty riding on this one.

Werder Bremen came out on top 2-0 in the reverse of this fixture, with the game here last season going Augsburg's way - 2-1 the score-line on that occasion.

Felix Uduokhai looks like being the only absentee for the home side. No confirmed injury absentees for Werder Bremen, but Eren Sami Dinkci does miss out through suspension.

With just the one point from their last five fixtures, Augsburg have found a poor run of results at just the wrong time. They have won five of 16 overall at home this season, but have lost only one of their last five here. Scoring two or more in three of their last four at home, and conceding more than once in only one of their last five, the stats have actually been fairly solid of late.

Werder are on an even worse run of form having picked up just the one point from the last 24 available to them. They have won four of 16 on the road, but their stats haven't been so good of late, scoring more than once in only one of their last six, and conceding three or more in three of their last six.

Two sides in poor form overall, but Augsburg recent efforts at home do compare favourably with those of Werder on the road and they may just do enough.

57 minutes 1-0 (Rani Khedira): A corner from the right initially cleared but nodded back in from the edge of area and breaking kindly for Khedira around ten yards out and to the right of centre. Khedira's low effort taking a slight deflection on its way into the bottom right corner, sparking wild celebrations amongst the Augsburg players and bench.

90 minutes 2-0 (Daniel Caligiuri (pen)): Werder coughing up possession on halfway and Augsburg springing into attack. Andre Hahn bursting into the right corner of the eighteen-yard box, only to be sent tumbling by Milot Rashica. Penalty kick. Caligiuri stepping up and slamming home to the left-hand side. The keeper going the right way but not much chance of getting there.

Analysis: A huge result for Augsburg and one which looked pretty unlikely at the point they were reduced to ten men in only the thirteenth minute. Full credit to them though, they battled hard when a man down, conceding possession but few real golden chances. And then when things were evened up again in the second half, it was they who took the initiative, not exactly dominating but taking advantage of the breaks which did come away. Werder not helping themselves with some dodgy defending and easily coughing up possession at times.

League Standings: Five points clear, with only one game remaining that is Augsburg safe now. Werder sit in the relegation playoff position at present, one point adrift of safety, and one point clear of the automatic drop. Big last day of the season in store.
